Performance optimization

Whatever the plant, its location and its operation profile it is always possible to improve and to optimize the performances considering that the term performance includes a wide range of parameters, most of the time working opposite direction as consumption and emissions.

Even it limits investigation range, the performance optimization very often concerns fuel oil consumption optimization: Even so optimization is always possible! How to make it?

Alliance Diesel Refit is able to propose solutions answering this question and to fulfil the Customer demands however at this stage we must all clear in our mind: Optimization means investment.

Looking for green card, friendly emission is very popular right now. Optimized emissions by the post treatment of the gas requires and investment level in the range of the price of the engine itself – and of course this requires to operate engine in quite perfect condition – To this level we will only consider this optimization from the maintenance point of view meaning maintenance cost.

Considering the amount of parts required for the maintenance and the involvement of a skilled repairer provider of the manpower we are in position based on our experience to validate the following ratios:

Considering investment level base 100 for an engine operated 75% of its nominal power – The investment to bring operation profile to 90% requires twice more budget – same engine brought to 100% - nominal power operation requires four time more investment. This is true to keep or to bring.

So we can optimize:

  • the fuel oil consumption of the engine and its supercharging system
  • the use of alternative fuel oil
  • the gas emissions including SCR, Scrubber, ESP, filters
  • liquid pollutant emission
  • impact of the emission generally speaking

And what about the gas conversion?

From our point of view gas conversion is one of the existing fuel oil conversion. No doubt: Gas conversion is efficient and well supported by the engine makers however gas conversion is the biggest conversion budget we can establish so it allows us to conclude: optimization is first of all a financial operation that requires optimization.

What problem, what saving objectives, what budget available?
Here are the 3 questions that must be debated and clarified between Customer and Alliance Diesel Refit to initiate this mission. Even if saving objectives are limited to the fuel oil consumption and the lube oil consumption as well.

Site discovery

When optimization objectives are validated they have to match with the true operation conditions of the plant either marine or shore unit.

Especially are objectives matching with the plant limits?
Propulsion requirements for maneuvering, primary energy source, environmental regulations, plant safety but also operator habits: they are most of the time in accordance with requirements but it also happens they are totally or partially wrong. all factors have influence on the efficiency and the result and each factor is disturbing the others.

Performance improvement

There is a wide range of improvements from the micro view: The reduction of the fuel oil consumption improves the engine efficiency so it generates higher solicitation levels on the engine and its components. It also affect the engine systems around and especially the cooling plant.

Opposite side we can consider the macro view for instance starting from the hull paint, the addition of one additional generator of adjusted capacity to face the morning pic of the power demand and thus giving more flexibility to the power plant.

The improvement of the gas emission always has a consequence: it increases the specific fuel oil consumption. Temporary or permanent this condition exists and requires building compromises.

This is not a game and nothing really changes with reference to an engine maker advertising. Alliance Diesel Refit should try its best to provide the true advice that exactly corresponds to the Customer’s need.
